Bioethics Open Research is the first publishing Platform to provide the bioethics field with a FAIR data policy for open access publishing. As the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the largest funder for the bioethics field – moves to an open, FAIR data policy in 2023, Taylor & Francis will be launching Bioethics Open Research to pave the way for bioethicists to publish with confidence in an open access format.
This one-of-a-kind Platform utilizes the rapid publishing model and technology of Taylor & Francis’ open research publishing arm, F1000, with a completely open peer review process across a wide range of different article types. Taylor & Francis and F1000 are creating the Platform to offer researchers across the interdisciplinary bioethics community a space to share and promote their work in an accessible and transparent way.
The American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB) is the first affiliate partner to launch a Gateway (a dedicated, branded publishing space) on the new Platform. This extends and diversifies the publishing opportunities offered by the AJOB journal portfolio, allowing all research outputs to be distributed quickly, openly and without barriers and in compliance with OA policy mandates from around the world.
Bioethics Open Research also features a new F1000 article type called Commentaries, providing an opportunity for authors to express and interpret ethical issues raised by articles on the Platform. These concentrated critical commentaries offer a clear and constructive debate, providing a valuable, easy to read report for those devoted to the ethics of medical research and practice. These Commentaries not only undergo open, post-publication peer review, but they also benefit from community review via the F1000 commenting functionality. This article type is new to F1000 and is being added to Bioethics Open Research to further tailor the Platform to the needs of the bioethics community.
Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director, F1000 said:
“In developing this ground-breaking publishing Platform in partnership with Taylor & Francis, we open up a new range of publishing options for Bioethics researchers, enabling them to publish their work rapidly and shape the future of the discipline. With the support of our affiliate partners, we hope that Bioethics Open Research can be a leading publication within the field of bioethics that emphasizes the importance of distributing research quickly, openly and without barriers to researchers at all stages of their career.”
This joint initiative between Taylor & Francis and F1000 strengthens their shared goals of amplifying and democratizing research and is another firm step forward in expanding Taylor & Francis’ capabilities in open research and open access publishing. Bioethics Open Research will expand Taylor & Francis’ already extensive and high-quality portfolio in the bioethics discipline.
Todd Hummel, Global Publishing Director at Taylor & Francis said:
“We are delighted to once again be working with our colleagues at F1000 to build a new Platform dedicated to Bioethics research that focuses on openness, dialogue, and community. The new Platform will allow us to offer a publication experience that prioritizes the author journey while ensuring that everything from the underlying data to the peer review is open and accessible. Through the affiliation between Bioethics Open Research and The American Journal of Bioethics we are breaking new ground by providing expanded publication options to authors eager to engage with open research and furthering AJOB’s position as a leader in Bioethics publishing.”
