I am interested in understanding the mechanisms that plants have evolved to enable them to compete effectively with their neighbours for soil nutrients. Specifically, we focus on how root architecture is modified by variations in the availability and distribution of organic and inorganic forms of N in the soil. This involves the use of molecular genetic tools to identify the components of nutrient signalling pathways that regulate root growth and development in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana.
