BIOGRAPHY

ACADEMIC POSITIONS:
• Professor, Research Department of Infection, UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences
• Pro-Provost (South Asia and the Middle East), UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences
• Professor of Virology, UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences

BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION:
After completing his degree and PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Southampton, Professor Emery undertook a post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Virology, University of Oxford, during which time his interest in virology started. He was appointed a Lecturer in Virology at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1988 and began working on human cytomegalovirus and papillomavirus infections. Following promotion to Senior Lecturer, he obtained his Chair within University College London in 2000.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
His research interests include using molecular biological and, more recently, immunological methods to understand viral pathogenesis in the immunocompromised host and the application of mathematical biology to gain further insight into the ways in which viruses causes disease and in understanding and predicting the emergence of drug resistance.
