BIOGRAPHY

ACADEMIC POSITION:
Dr Schatz is Professor of Immunobiology at Yale University School of Medicine and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

EDUCATION:
He received undergraduate degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, and philosophy and politics from Oxford University. His PhD degree and postdoctoral training were done with David Baltimore at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. His graduate work resulted in the cloning of the recombination activating genes, RAG1 and RAG2.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr Schatz's laboratory is interested in understanding the early development of the immune system, with a particular focus on the processes that assemble and diversify antigen receptor genes (reactions known as V(D)J recombination and somatic hypermutation). The laboratory studies both the mechanism and the regulation of these two complex nuclear processes.
