Research interests:
The major foci of studies in Dr. Schachter's laboratory are the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of chlamydial infections. In the United States, these studies stress sexually transmitted diseases, with a lesser interest in respiratory infections. In developing countries, trachoma is the major focus, with some interest in the other two. In addition, the laboratory is evaluating diagnostic methods for chlamydial infections.

Dr Schachter is Past- President of the American Sexually Transmitted Disease Association and former Chair, Sexually Transmitted Diseases Diagnostics Initiative, World Health Organization.
Dr Schachter has published numerous articles with reference to sexually transmitted diseases, he is editor of the journal 'Sexually Transmitted Diseases'. His contribution to research led to the award of The Thomas A. Parran Award for long and distinguished contributions to the field of STD control.
