Research Interests:

As a coral reef ecologist, I produced some of the first descriptive works on patterns of spatial and temporal variability in Australian coral communities and established long-term ecological studies that have continued and expanded to the present. These studies have been complemented by major analytical field and modeling studies on the roles of various disturbances in coral community dynamics: crown-or-thorns starfish, cyclones and heat stress leading to coral bleaching. A major area of published output concerns quantitative and conceptual works about ecological evaluation of coral reefs, and the resilience of coral communities and populations in the face of disturbances of changing severity and frequency. My research results and advice to government have been influential in the development and acceptance of conservation and management plans for coral reef ecosystems in Australia (the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo Marine Park) and in Indonesia.
