BIOGRAPHY
ACADEMIC POSITION:Dr Ashish M Kamat is an Associate Professor and Attending Surgeon in the Department of Urology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. He is also the Director of the Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program, which is one of the premiere training programs in the country.
AWARDS AND HONORS:
His basic, translational and clinical research is funded by peer-reviewed awards including from the National Cancer Institute.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND MEMBERSHIPS:
He serves as co-project PI on the MD Anderson Cancer Center GU (Bladder) SPORE, which is the only one of its kinds in the country. Dr Kamat is an active member of the American Urological Association and a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and is active in many organizations including Cancer Support Groups for patients such as the Bladder WebCafe and Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN).
PUBLICATIONS AND EDITORIAL ACTIVITIES:
Dr Kamat has authored numerous editorials and over 75 publications in prestigious peer reviewed journals, serves on the editorial board of Expert Reviews in Anticancer Therapy and is listed in 'Who's Who in Medicine'.
CLINICAL AND RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr Kamat's area of expertise is in urologic oncology with special emphasis on bladder, prostate, kidney and testicular cancers. He has a special interest in bladder and prostate cancer with an emphasis on organ sparing therapies, minimally invasive techniques (e.g. robotic surgery) and orthotopic bladder substitution. A major focus of his laboratory research is to develop novel therapies for bladder cancer using an approach which encompasses novel use of existing agents, the identification or novel targets and therapies, or a combination of these strategies.
