BIOGRAPHY

ACADEMIC POSITION:
Richard Underwood is Professor of Cardiac Imaging at Imperial College London (National Heart and Lung Institute) and Honorary Consultant to Royal Brompton Hospital.

EDUCATION:
MD, University of Oxford, UK

MEMBERSHIPS:
Professor Underwood is an active member in numerous societies, he is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, the Royal College of Physicians of London, the Royal College of Radiologists, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

AWARDS:
In 2004, he received the gold clinical excellence award by the British Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards.

EDITORIAL:
His editorial responsibilites include being Specialty editor (nuclear medicine) of the British Medical Bulletin. He is on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiac Imaging, Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia, International Journal of Cardiology, European Journal of Echocardiography, and Acute Cardiac Care.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
A cardiologist by initial training, he now has dual specialisation in cardiology and nuclear medicine. His principle interest is noninvasive imaging of the cardiovascular system, in particular nuclear cardiology, X-ray CT and magnetic resonance imaging. He has been involved in the pioneering work at Royal Brompton Hospital where many of the techniques of cardiac imaging have been developed. He is also in charge of the hospital's department of nuclear medicine which is the largest nuclear cardiology centre in the country. His research interests include myocardial hibernation and the cost-effectiveness of imaging techniques in the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease.
