BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Salkin currently serves as president and chief scientific officer of Information From Science, LLC, an independent consulting firm whose primary goal is to bring scientific principles to the investigation of environmental issues. Dr. Salkin received his B.A. and M.S. in biology from Northwestern University and his doctorate degree from the University of California at Berkeley prior to joining Wadsworth Center, the clinical and environmental laboratories of the New York State Department of Health. During his 30-plus year tenure, his career assignments have included positions requiring applied science and administrative skills. Dr. Salkin first served as assistant director and research scientist in the Laboratories for Mycology, the states mycologic diagnostic facility. He was subsequently appointed the director of the Laboratories with responsibility for its cultural, serologic and molecular diagnostics activities, as well as for the states proficiency testing program in medical mycology. During this time he totally redesigned the latter program, which would become the model for similar quality control techniques throughout the world.Dr. Salkin is an adjunct associate professor within the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the School of the Public Health of the State University of New York. In this capacity he serves as the coordinator of the departments introductory course on infectious diseases and public health and lectures in the course on medical mycology.
In addition to over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals concerning his scientific investigations in clinical microbiology, Dr. Salkin is the sole author or co-author of several chapters in widely used reference texts. He has presented scientific and popular talks on clinical mycology and public health issues for numerous professional and non-governmental organizations, including Health Care Without Harm and Green Peace. Furthermore, he has presented workshops on medical mycology, proficiency testing, biosafety, and indoor environmental quality for the United States Environmental Training Institute, National Laboratory Training Network and several scientific professional organizations.
