BIOGRAPHY

Jan Grunewald studied chemistry at the Philipps-University Marburg (Germany) and the University of Cambridge (UK). He then joined the Department of Biochemistry at the Philipps-University Marburg where he studied non-ribosomal thioesterases with Mohamed A. Marahiel and earned a Ph.D. in 2005. From 2006 to 2008, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow with Peter G. Schultz at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla (CA) where his research focused on the immunochemical termination of self-tolerance. In December 2008 Jan Grunewald joined the Protein Sciences Department at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF, San Diego, CA) as a Research Investigator.
Jan Grunewald received several awards for his Ph.D. work, most importantly for the best dissertation at the Departments for Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the Philipps-University Marburg in 2005. His research was continuously supported by fellowships from the German Fund of the Chemical Industry (FCI), the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation (AvH) as well as a US O-1 visa for "Extraordinary Abilities in Science". His research interests include protein evolution, biotherapeutics, and immunology.
