BIOGRAPHY

CURRENT POSITION:
Executive Vice President, Medical Affairs, Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center

BACKGROUND:
Dr Louis M Katz has served as the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center’s Medical Director since 1986. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1976, Dr Katz completed his internship, residency and fellowship at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has specialized in infectious diseases throughout his career, which has included a clinical practice in Davenport, Iowa as well as the position of Medical Director for the Scott County (Iowa) Health Department. Dr Katz received board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in infectious diseases in 1982.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
A prominent figure in national blood banking organizations, Dr Katz has served as President of the Board of Directors of America’s Blood Centers (ABC), the national organization of independent, community-based blood centers that supply half of the blood and components transfused in the United States. Additional appointments at the national level include service as Chair of ABC’s Scientific, Medical and Technical Committee, Chair of the AABB Transfusion Transmitted Disease Committee, Chair of the AABB Bacterial Contamination Task Force and participation on the AABB Interagency Task Force on Pandemic Flu and the Blood Supply. He has also served as a member and Chair of the US Food and Drug Administration’s Blood Products Advisory Committee.
