ACADEMIC POSITION:
Associate Professor and Head of Pulmonary Engineering Group, Technische Universität Dresden

EDUCATION:
• 1983-1988 Studied engineering science at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
• 1985-1991 Studied medicine at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)
• 1989-1991 Master's Thesis (MSc) in Biomedical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)
• 1992-1994 Implementation of the thesis in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Medicine Mannheim of the University of Heidelberg. Graduated summa cum laude
• June 2004 Habilitation in anesthesiology with the thesis 'Studies on the measurement of effective pulmonary capillary blood flow by partial CO2 rebreathing – from the laboratory to the development and clinical testing of a bedside monitor'
• June 2005 Awarded the venia legendi for Anesthesiology

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Our group is primarily concerned with the development and evaluation of innovative forms of ventilation, especially in the treatment of acute lung injury (ALI/ARDS).

Another focus is on the engineering development of innovative tools for the diagnosis and modeling of the respiratory system.
