Research interests:
Dr Ito's group carry out and/or participate in various clinical studies including diabetic nephropathy and IgA nephropathy. They study renal physiology and pathophysiology using various approaches including microperfusion that we invented by themselves, patch-clump, molecular biology, immunopathology.

Research themes are as follows: 1) glomerular hemodynamics, 2) medullary circulation, 3) transporter (organic anion, sodium) and ion channels, 4) arachidonic acid metabolism by renal tubules, 5) role of leukocytes and macrophages in the progression of focal glomerulosclerosis (FGS) and diabetic glomerulosclerosis, 6) role of adhesion molecules, integrin family, and complement receptors in proliferative glomerulonephritis, 7) pathogenesis of lipoprotein glomerulopathy, 8) expression of heparan sulfate N-sulfotransferase (HSNST) mRNA in experimental nephrosis.

Recent major achievements are 1) demonstration of non-genomic action of aldosterone that causes afferent and efferent arteriolar constriction and 2) identification of novel human renal organic anion transporter that transports digoxin.
