BIOGRAPHY

EDUCATION: Heini Murer (born 1944) studied biology at the University of Fribourg from 1969-1971 and majored in biochemistry, the subject in which he was also awarded his doctorate

MEMBERSHIPS/AWARDS: Heini Murer is a member and also acted as President of several associations in the field of physiology and nephrology. Between 1993-2004 he was also Research Commissioner at the Swiss National Science Foundation.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Current research focuses on four different aspects, all in relation to renal proximal tubular and small intestinal transport of inorganic phosphate, in particular the brush border membrane Na/Pi-cotransporters (type II):

Cellular/molecular aspects of transport regulation
Identification/characterization of interacting proteins
Structure/function relationships (also 2D/3D-structure)
Analysis of kinetic properties ('transport-cycle')
