Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA

BIOGRAPHY

Martin Schwartz earned a BA in chemistry from New College in Sarasota FL a PhD in physical chemistry from Stanford University, and did postdoctoral research in biology at MIT in the laboratory of Richard Hynes. He joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School in the Dept of Physiology and Biophysics in 1983, where he was among the first to report that integrin mediated adhesion could regulate signaling pathways in cells. He moved to the Dept of Vascular Biology at Scripps Research Institute in 1991 where he continued his work on integrin signaling with an emphasis on endothelial cell biology. In 2002 he moved to the University of Virginia where he is professor in the Departments of Microbiology, Cell Biology and Biomedical Engineering. His current research program studies cellular and biophysical approaches to basic questions in integrin signaling, applications to cancer, mechanotransduction in the vascular system and cell migration.
