BIOGRAPHY

ACADEMIC POSITIONS:
Chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine; Co-Director of the Connors Center for Women’s Health & Gender Biology, Brigham & Women’s Hospital Harvard Medical School; Elizabeth F Brigham Professor of Women’s Health and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

EDUCATION:
• BA from Harvard
• MD from CWRU
• MPH and DrPH from Harvard School of Public Health
• Board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology & Metabolism

GRANTS:
Principal Investigator of several grants from the NIH, including the Women’s Health Initiative Vanguard Clinical Center at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, Trial of Antioxidant Therapy & Cardiovascular Disease in Women, and Biochemical & Genetic Markers for Type 2 Diabetes, among others.

MEMBERSHIPS:
Member of many professional societies and serves on the editorial/medical advisory boards of several medical journals.

AWARDS AND HONORS:
One of ten Heroes in Women’s Health by American Health for Women magazine (1997), one of the top ten 'Champions of Women’s Health' by Ladies Home Journal (2000), one of Boston’s 'Top Docs for Women' by Boston Magazine (2001), Henry Ingersoll Bowditch Award for Excellence in Public Health from the Massachusetts Medical Society in 2002, and the 'Woman in Science' Award from the American Medical Women’s Association in 2003. Featured in the National Library of Medicine’s exhibition, 'History of American Women Physicians'; Elected, member, Association of American Physicians, 2005.

PUBLICATIONS:
Published >500 articles, and editor-in-chief of the textbook, ‘Prevention of Myocardial Infarction’ (Oxford University Press, 1996), and author of ‘The 30-Minute Fitness Solution: A Four-Step Plan for Women of All Ages’ (Harvard University Press, 2001).

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Preventive medicine and chronic disease epidemiology, risk factors for cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and breast cancer in women. One of the lead investigators on landmark women’s health studies (Women’s Health Initiative, Nurses’ Health Study, Women’s Antioxidant & Cardiovascular Study, and Women’s Health Study).
