ACADEMIC POSITION:Professor Nico van Zandwijk is currently Director of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute at the University of Sydney.
EDUCATION:
He earned his medical degree at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1973.
MEMBERSHIPS:
Professor van Zandwijk has served as Secretary (19821988) and Chair (19881994) of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Lung Cancer Group. He has chaired a number of boards and committees including: the Scientific Board of the clinical section of the Netherlands Cancer Institute; a National Advisory Board for new lung cancer medications, and a state Council on asbestos and lung cancer. He has also been a member of the Advisory Board of the Thoracic Section of the French National Cancer Institute. Professor van Zandwijk was on the Board of Directors of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer from 2005-2009 and is co-chairing the World Lung Cancer Conference in Amsterdam in 2011. He is a Study Coordinator in several international studies, and has authored or co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed international papers and chapters.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Professor van Zandwijk's major research interest is in thoracic oncology. He founded the Department of Thoracic Oncology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and was head of department from 1985 to 2008. His department was the first to study mediastinal staging, intra-operative chemo- and photodynamic therapy in malignant mesothelioma. In 2007, Professor van Zandwijk was asked to become the inaugural director of the purpose built Asbestos Diseases Research Institute in Sydney. Over the years he has been involved in many clinical trials, translational research and mentoring more than 20 students who have become research leaders in their own right.
