RESEARCH INTERESTS:
I study the effects of chronic mechanical unloading on the structure and function of the excitation-contraction coupling machinery in the heart. This is an important clinical issue due to the increasing use of left ventricular assist devices which act predominantly by unloading the left ventricle. My hypothesis is that in the setting of chronic heart failure, initial improvements induced by mechanical unloading may be mediated by repair of the disrupted EC coupling machinery but that excessive unloading may damage this system.
