EDUCATION:
Prof. Bhattacharya received his PhD from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia and was a Sloan fellow with Mitch Sogin at MBL and a Humboldt Scholar in Cologne, Germany. Prior to coming to Rutgers, he was a Professor at the University of Iowa for 11 years.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Prof. Bhattacharya is a Co-Editor of the Journal of Phycology.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
My lab has a long-standing interest in algal/protist evolution and genomics and specific projects include elucidating the endosymbiotic origin of photosynthetic organelles (plastids), functional genomics of 'red tide'-causing dinoflagellates, erecting the eukaryotic tree of life, and studying microRNA evolution.
