ACADEMIC POSITIONS:Bart Roep is Professor of Medicine, Professor of Diabetology & Immunopathology, Director of the Diabetes Center of Excellence, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences and Head of the Section of Autoimmune Diseases at the Leiden University Medical Center in The Netherlands.
EDUCATION:
After studying medical sciences at the University of Amsterdam, he obtained his PhD in medicine (cum laude) in Leiden in 1992.
MEMBERSHIPS/AWARDS:
Holds positions on a number of scientific advisory boards/research panels including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF), the Dutch Diabetes Research Council, the Dutch and German National Research Councils, the European Union, the European Foundation for Diabetes Research (EFSD) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA.
In 2002, he received the prestigious Minkowski Prize for outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of diabetes mellitus.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
The role of T cells in pathogenesis and immune-intervention therapy of type 1, insulin-dependent, diabetes.
