Qin Shen
New York Neural Stem Cell Institute, Rensselaer, NY, USA F1000 Associate Faculty Member (since 21 August 2008)BIOGRAPHY
Qin Shen is an Associate Faculty Member who works with Faculty Member Sally Temple to recommend the scientific literature in their field.
Qin Shen also has responsibility for checking the contents of the following journals to ensure that the highest quality research relevant to their own interests within these publications is comprehensively and systematically evaluated for F1000:- Nature
- Nature Neuroscience
CURRENT POSITION:
Assistant Professor
EDUCATION:
Dr Shen earned a degree in Pharmacology in 1991 from Shanghai Medical University, choosing research over a clinical pathway. She continued her research in Neurobiology at Albany Medical College with Dr Temple, earning a PhD from the Neuroscience Graduate Program by purifying a brain protein which mediates asymmetric stem cell division in the cerebral cortex.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr Shen presently studies the regulation of neural stem cell self-renewal and cell fates as well as neural-endothelial niche interactions. She continues to collaborate with Dr Temple while pursuing independent research projects to probe how stem cells function in the developing brain, particularly the effects of the niche environment. 'Many researchers are starting to manipulate stem cells with the application of what theyve learned from the study of normal nervous system development. We can learn from stem cells how differentiation factors affect growth, and how to regulate the stem cell niche to explore the functions of different cell types during development. How are neurons guided to migrate in the developing brain? How do different types of neurons acquire their identities?'
