Department of Pharmacology, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC, USA F1000 Faculty Member (since 03 November 2010)BIOGRAPHY
ACADEMIC POSITION:Professor of Pharmacology
EDUCATION:
PhD, Physiology and Biophysics, Medical College of Virginia, 1991
AHA Postdoctoral Fellow, University of California, Berkeley
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
My laboratory investigates signal transduction mechanisms for cardiac and smooth muscle cell regulation in order to develop therapeutic strategies against heart and lung diseases. One current focus is to study mechanisms of growth and death of pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cells and right ventricular cardiac muscle cells. Our goal is to develop therapeutic strategies to treat patients with pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension is a devastating disease without cure, characterized by increased blood pressure in pulmonary circulation due to increased vasoconstriction and cell growth. Increased pulmonary vascular resistance eventually leads to right heart failure and death. Another project is to address a clinically important issue on severe asthma. We are investigating the roles of redox signaling in the pathogenesis of this lethal condition.
