ACADEMIC POSITION:Professor and Head of the Division of Cardiology, University of Frankfurt
EDUCATION:
Dr Zeiher received his MD from the University of Freiburg, Germany, in 1981. He was an intern and resident from 1981-2/1986 at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg. From 3/1986-12/1987 he was a clinical research fellow at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, supported by a research grant from the German Research Foundation. From 1988-1989 he completed his fellowship in cardiology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg.
MEMBERSHIPS AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Dr Zeiher is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and is past-chairman of the Working Group on Interventional Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including Circulation, Circulation Research, European Heart Journal and others. Dr Zeiher is currently the Co-Chairman of the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS) of the German Research Foundation (DFG)
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
His research interests include basic and clinical aspects of endothelial cell function and atherosclerosis, the role of stem and progenitor cells for endogenous cardiovascular repair as well as their therapeutic application for regenerating cardiovascular function, and the use of biomarkers for risk prediction and therapeutic stratification of patients with acute coronary syndromes.
