PREVIOUS AND CURRENT ACADEMIC POSITIONS:Dr Stehouwer was appointed professor of medicine and vice-chair of the Department of Medicine in 2000 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. In 2004, he accepted a position as professor of medicine and chair of the department of medicine at the University of Maastricht.
EDUCATION:
CDA (Coen) Stehouwer (born Rotterdam, 1960) obtained an MD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (1985; cum laude). He was registered as internist in 1990 and obtained a PhD in 1992 (Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre, Amsterdam). He received postgraduate training in epidemiology and molecular biology.
AWARDS:
Awards include the Dr F Gerritzen Award for excellence in diabetes research (1993), the European Castelli Pedroli Award for excellence in research regarding complications of diabetes (2005), the Dutch Society for Vascular Medicine distinguished career award (2007); and the Ruitinga Van Swieten guest professorship at the University of Amsterdam (2009).
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
His field of interest is the vascular complications of metabolic diseases, with particular emphasis on diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and hyperhomocysteinaemia (about 550 papers in peer-reviewed journals). He has supervised 49 PhD theses (1996-present). His Hirsch index is 70 and the number of citations is >19,000. He has been co-editor of the Dutch Textbook of Internal Medicine (since 1996).
