Renae Ryan
Department of Pharmacology, University of Sydney, Australia F1000 Associate Faculty Member (since 25 November 2009)BIOGRAPHY
Renae Ryan is an Associate Faculty Member who works with Faculty Member Robert Vandenberg to recommend the scientific literature in their field.
Renae Ryan also has responsibility for checking the contents of the following journals to ensure that the highest quality research relevant to their own interests within these publications is comprehensively and systematically evaluated for F1000:- Journal of Biological Chemistry
- Nature Structural and Molecular Biology
ACADEMIC POSITION:
Dr Renae Ryan is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Pharmacology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Sydney.
EDUCATION:
Dr Ryan is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow. She graduated with a Science degree with honours in 1996 and a PhD in Pharmacology in 2004 from the University of Sydney. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University, New York and at the National Institutes of Health, Maryland before returning to the Discipline of Pharmacology at the University of Sydney in 2007.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Associate Professor Ryan's research focuses on understanding the way in which proteins move molecules across the cell membrane. In particular, she studies transporters for the neurotransmitters glutamate and glycine that play an important role in regulating normal neurotransmission in the brain. The dysfunction of these transporters has been implicated in disease states such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and ischemia following a stroke. Dr.Ryan uses a variety of biochemical and molecular techniques to try and understand the mechanism of transport and also how drugs interact with these proteins.
