BIOGRAPHY

ACADEMIC POSITION:
• Professor of Chemistry, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
• Professor of Biological Chemistry, Medical School

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
My laboratory focuses on two areas of chemical biology that have medical and environmental significance. In one project, we are discovering new enzymes involved in hydrocarbon metabolism that can be used to produce next generation biofuels. In a second project, we are synthesizing novel proteins and peptides that incorporate fluorinated amino acids. These we can use to both modify the properties of biologically active peptides and study their mechanism of action. Our research is inherently inter-disciplinary in nature and draws on a synergistic combination of bio-organic, bio-inorganic and bio-physical chemistry.
