Understanding the factors that control community composition and structure is a fundamental aim of community ecology. Community composition at individual locations is thought to be a joint function of environmental filtering (species sorting) and priority effects associated with dispersal (who gets where first). The relative importance of these processes has not been well documented. Moreover, rare taxa are often thought to be largely controlled by dispersal limitation and common species by species sorting - an idea that the authors test with data from streams in Brazil. In contrast to their expectations, the authors find that the observed distributions of both common and rare taxa are most consistent with the environmental filtering mechanism, i.e., species sorting. Their results add to a growing literature that supports the view that species sorting is the dominant process structuring communities.
