The world is warming and organisms are responding to this change in many ways, including the pole-ward range expansion of many tropical species described in this paper. While there are many examples of these range shifts in the terrestrial sphere, there are fewer examples from the marine realm. David Booth and his colleagues have been monitoring the season appearance of tropical fishes in the temperate waters of the east coast of Australia for a number of years {1}. In this interesting paper, Figueira and Booth demonstrate that recent increases in average winter sea temperatures are allowing these vagrant fish to survive the winter and establish populations.
Current projections cited by Figueira and Booth estimate a further increase in temperature of 2°C in this region by the end of the century, which suggests that major changes in the distribution and abundance of marine species along the east coast of New South Wales (NSW) are imminent with unknown consequences for these ecosystems.
