This seminal paper from Britton and Edgar describes how dietary nutrients (particularly amino acids) can influence both mitotic and endoreplicative cell cycles in developing larvae. In particular, they describe how a fat-derived signal is essential to stimulate neural stem cell divisions in response to dietary protein.
