This review paper provides a good overview of the Brazilian sugarcane ethanol industry by one of the people who triggered the expansion of the industry when he served as a minister in the Brazilian government. This study reported that in 2008, ethanol from sugarcane replaced about 40% of the gasoline used in Brazil.
