This paper offers a quantification of carbon fluxes to soil humus in response to canopy CO2 enrichment and, thus, enhanced photosynthesis. However, the reason why I recommend the paper is due to its showing that reduced stomatal diffusive conductance under elevated CO2 and the resultant higher soil moisture can revert this photosynthesis-only driven carbon flow.
In absolute terms these carbon flows are below the detection limits of any classical soil carbon assessment. However, by employing stable carbon isotope signals and a soil carbon model, the authors could estimate an average 10g carbon m-2 a-1 sequestration to soils due to elevated CO2, which vanished once they accounted for CO2-driven water savings.
This paper highlights the significance of accounting for both photosynthesis and water (stomata)-driven responses to elevated CO2. The paper further underlines the importance of soil moisture in any soil carbon-related global change projections.
