Biochemical Society 2013 - CRISPR: evolution, mechanisms and infection
Conference abstract submission - deadline passed
St Andrews, UK
The extreme evolutionary pressure exerted on cells by viruses, and vice versa, is a key driving force in evolution. Perhaps the most exciting development in this area in the past 10 years is the discovery of the CRISPR system for antiviral defence. These clusters of regularly interspaced palindromic repeats are genomically encoded by many prokaryotes and carry a record of past viral infections. Transcription and processing of the CRISPR RNA leads to RNA-directed cleavage of the nucleic acid of invading mobile elements, mediated by large, complex molecular machines assembled from CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins. The process of viral DNA capture and incorporation into CRISPR loci is still enigmatic and is an interesting example of pure Lamarckian evolution. The dynamic interplay between viruses and hosts also has clear parallels to the predator:prey relationships studied more widely in biology. CRISPRs are the most rapidly evolving parts of most prokaryotic genomes, providing opportunities for the study of evolution in the field in real time. Topics: * crRNA biogenesis and processing * Structure and Mechanism of Cas protein complexes * Viral DNA capture * Virus:host interactions, evolution and ecology * Applications of CRISPR technology

100th Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting 2013
Minneapolis, MN, USA
In anticipation of the 100th Annual Meeting in 2015, the 98th Annual Ecological Society of America Meeting will look to the past as guidance in understanding and predicting future trends in ecosystem dynamics and services. With the backdrop of the beautiful city of Minneapolis, this meeting will capture the long influence of the ESA on ecology, and will set the stage for events leading to the centennial meeting. Long-term data, from fossil and pollen records, environmental proxies and observations that date in some cases from the early 1900s, provide the historical context and an important baseline for future trajectories. However, the future of Planet Earth is far from certain or predictable based on its past. Global drivers are changing in slope, magnitude, and direction, novel organisms are being introduced or developed, no-analog communities are forming, and humans continue to modify and interact with their environment. Historic legacies provide the template for these complex interactions. Developing and maintaining sustainable trajectories in the midst of these certain, yet highly unpredictable, changes that affect and interact with ecological systems is a critical challenge for ecologists, and provide the theme of the 98th meeting.

New York Academy of Sciences 2013 - The Microbiome in Health, Disease, and Therapeutics: Bugs, Guts, and Drugs
Conference abstract submission - deadline 23 August 2013
New York, NY, USA
The host of microorganisms inhabiting the human body, or microbiome, plays essential roles in both health and the pathogenesis and resolution of disease. Symbioses between humans and the microbiome influence broad aspects of human biology including nutrition, immune function, and even brain development. Altered microbial community profiles are associated with a variety of chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, allergic conditions, obesity, and psychiatric and neurological disorders. The microbiome influences therapeutic interventions: metabolism of drugs by both intestinal bacteria and enterocytes, leading to systemic absorption may provide valuable insights into pre-systemic drug metabolism, delivery, and toxicity. A better understanding of the metabolic pathways may aid in drug development and toxicity evaluation processes. The microbiome itself may be a target of, or tool for new therapeutic strategies for diseases as diverse as irritable bowel syndrome, and Parkinson’s disease. This symposium reviews the basic biology of the human microbiome symbiosis and its systemic effects, the impact of the gut microbiome on drug metabolism, the opportunities offered by the microbiome for new drug development, and the essential role played by the microbiome in a variety of disease states.

Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality Annual Meeting 2013
Conference abstract submission - deadline passed
San Diego, CA, USA
Connections: Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Sexuality which will focus on facilitating discourse between a variety of disciplines on sexuality research and creating a space for an intercourse of ideas. We’ve witnessed the repudiation of long held misconceptions about sexuality and established a science of sexuality that now forms a complex body of epidemiological, biomedical, psychological, sociological, anthropological and clinical knowledge. This was accomplished through alliances and collaborations, amid conflict and controversy. Today we’re contending with polarities and commonalities among sexologists, clinicians, researchers, educators and policymakers. The scientists among us will continue this legacy through having a commitment to interdisciplinary communication and transference of knowledge.
