Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been incorporated into the management of colorectal cancer (CRC) in recent years. The specific aim of this project is to systematically review some of the CAM modalities in the prevention or treatment of CRC.
The author searched MEDLINE (1966 to date, via PubMed), The Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (National Institute for Health Research and The University of York), and Virtual Health Library (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde at São Paulo, Brasil: LILACS – Latin America and Caribbean Health Sciences) to find articles relevant to CAM in the prevention or treatment of CRC. The literature of the effect of CAM modalities in the prevention or treatment of CRC is scarce. Three studies evaluated CRC prevention (37.5%) and five studies evaluated treatment. Seven studies evaluated herbal/vegetable/plant extracts (87.5%).
In conclusion, further studies of the effect of CAM modalities in the prevention or treatment of CRC are needed. Additionally, physicians must prepare to discuss CAM with cancer patients.
