The pain and discomfort experienced by colonoscopies can be reduced by sedation and analgesia. However, sedation during endoscopy provides for possible hazards in the form of hypoventilation, hypoxia and hypotension. This may cause damage to the patient.
There is no question of a linear relationship between BIS and saturation, pulse rate and blood pressure. Determining the BIS is therefore not a measure of hemodynamic and ventilatory parameters.
