Discovery of transcription factor binding site (TFBS) motifs is an important task in understanding gene expression. Experimental work has shown that these motifs are often (quasi-)palindromic. We propose a novel measure of TFBS motif palindromicity based on information theory, in order to improve motif discovery.
We show here that our measure gives a higher score to the more palindromic motifs, based on application to known E. coli motifs. We have implemented this measure and are incorporating it within an improved motif discovery algorithm.
Further investigation of the link between our measure and transcription factor protein structure and function.
