The evaluations
EVALUATIONS
Faculty of 1000 is divided into more than 40 Faculties (with more planned), each of which comprises Heads of Faculty, Heads of Sections, Faculty Members and Associate Faculty Members. Each peer-nominated Faculty Member, and their Associate Faculty Member(s), selects and evaluates the best articles they have read in their chosen specialties, which are grouped according to the Faculty's Sections. They write brief, accessible comments, highlighting the key findings and putting the work into context.
Ratings
The Faculty Member also gives each article a rating (Recommended, Must Read or Exceptional), from which F1000 calculates the F1000 factor. Although the comments for each article are individually attributed, the article's F1000 factor is calculated from the ratings it receives each time it is selected and rated by different Faculty members.
Classifications
Faculty Members also tag the article with the following classifications, if appropriate:
Changes Clinical Practice: the article recommends a complete, specific and immediate change in practice by clinicians for a defined group of patients
Confirmation: validates previously published data or hypotheses
Controversial: challenges established dogma
Good for Teaching: key article in field and/or well written
Interesting Hypothesis: presents new model
New Finding: presents original data, models or hypotheses
Novel Drug Target: suggests new targets for drug discovery
Refutation: disproves previously published data or hypotheses
Technical Advance: introduces a new practical/theoretical technique, or novel use of an existing technique
F1000 will further assign any relevant article types: Clinical Trial, Systematic Review/Meta-analysis and Review/Commentary.
INDEXING
Each article is then indexed in all appropriate Sections within each Faculty. Cross-indexing ensures that articles are brought to your attention irrespective of the Faculty for which they are evaluated. For instance, an article on stroke could be indexed in the 'Cerebrovascular Disease', 'Hypertension', 'Neuro-Intensive Care' and 'Neurosurgical Care' Sections. An article can be evaluated by more than one Faculty Member – each evaluation brings independent interpretation and can highlight relevance across Faculties, offering different perspectives and interpretations of an article.
The NEW EVALUATION icon
The NEW EVALUATION icon indicates evaluations that have been added to F1000 in the previous 7 days and is placed next to the name of the Faculty Member who wrote the new evaluation. The icon does not necessarily indicate a new article, but it does indicate a new evaluation for an article that might already have caught your eye, thus leading you to read the new comments.
